Bookish Reflections

Pre-Ordering Books

I am one of those people who does not typically pre-order books. I just rather wait until they are out before deciding if I want or need the book in my personal library. However, this year there are quite a few books that have caught my eye and I found that I could not resist.

The first book I pre-ordered is Katherine Arden’s new middle-school read Small Spaces.

small spaces by katherine arden When eleven-year-old Ollie lost her mother in a plane crash, she sought solace in her books. So when she stumbles upon a distraught woman standing on the banks of the river intent on throwing a book into the water, Ollie stops her, steals the book and rides away on her bike. Upon reading, Ollie discovers a chilling ghost story about a girl, Elizabeth Morrison, who is being chased through cornfields filled with scarecrows by two brothers with deadly intent. When she finds the graves of Elizabeth Morrison and her tormentors, Jonathan and Caleb, on a farm during a school trip, on a day already full of odd occurrences, Ollie starts to think this book is more than just a book.

On the ride home, the school bus breaks down along the side of the road and none of the kids or their teacher can get service on their cell phones to call for help. And then Ollie’s digital wristwatch starts a mysterious countdown, with the word RUN spelled out on the face. She and two unlikely new friends are the only ones to heed its warning. As night begins to fall, they head out into the woods, bracketed by fearsome scarecrows. The bus driver gives them a word of advice. In order to survive whatever is coming, they’ll need to keep to small spaces.

I have only read Katherine Arden’s book The Bear and the Nightingale which is the first book in a trilogy. Her writing and knowledge of Russian folklore and history captivated me. I did no read the book, I devoured it. After I finished, I knew Katherine Arden was going to be one of my new favorite authors.  Once I saw this cool, creepy middle school read I knew I had to buy it.

The book will be out September 25th of this year. Only a few days before October begins, which, in my mind, it makes it the perfect October read.

I definitely suggest you all check out one of her books. She really is an incredible story teller.

Another book I pre-ordered is from one of my favorite YouTubers: Jenny Mustard . She is a Scandavian minimalist and vegan who has a Youtube channel and a podcast with her long-time boyfriend David Mustard that center around inspiration, minimalism, and fashion.

Earlier this year, Jenny announced she would be releasing a coffee table book on minimalism. The book is titled Simple Matters: A Scandinavian’s Approach to Work, Home, and Style.

simple maters by jenny mustard In a beautiful collection of essays, Simple Matters challenges readers to simplify their life by prioritizing emotional and physical health, curating a personal style, and pursuing one’s dreams.

Jenny Mustard has created a unique lifestyle book that taps into the ever-increasing human longing for less clutter and more meaning, be it at home, at work, or in our relationships. By encouraging readers to make their surroundings a little more lovely, to simplify eating habits and wardrobe, to travel with purpose and ease, and to discover what they truly want to dream about and focus on, Jenny provides the inspiration to curate one’s everyday life into something simple, realistic, and utterly enjoyable.

Simultaneously inspirational and aspirational, Jenny’s content is positive, personal, and inclusive—42 essays cover everything from simple kitchen staples, the art of the travel plan, indulgent eating, addiction, failure as a road to success, the makings of a happy relationship, the red thread, building a career, and the Scandinavian way at home.

Being a minimalist in-progress, I thought this was an apt purchase. I know Jenny’s essays will be inspirational and heart-felt. Jenny Mustard is all about helping others live meaningful lives Couple with David’s photos, I know this book will also be a beautiful piece of art.

I really urge you all to give one of her videos or podcasts I try. The Mustards’ soothing voices are everything.

Jenny Mustard’s book will be out September 4, 2018.

The last book I have pre-ordered is Michelle Obama’s memoir Becoming. Michelle Obama is one of the strongest and inspiring woman that I know. It will be a treat to learn about her from her own perspective.

Becoming Michelle Obama In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African-American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms.

Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.

Her memoir will be out November 13th, 2018.
